With its digital, interactive Water Management Toolkit, Futouris, together with the former Hotelplan Group (now part of the DERTOUR Group) and its partner Triple Impact Hospitality, supports hotels in specifically reducing their water consumption and sustainably increasing their operational efficiency. The new toolkit was first presented in November 2025 during a sustainability training course for hotels in Hurghada, Egypt.

From manual to digital practical tool

The digital Futouris Water Management Toolkit is the logical next step in the evolution of the existing Futouris Water Management Manual. In this joint project between Futouris and the former Hotelplan Group, now part of the DERTOUR Group, the expertise from the manual has been transformed and expanded into an interactive, user-friendly online toolkit in cooperation with the sustainability consultancy Triple Impact Hospitality. The toolkit is currently available in English and offers hotels practical strategies and concrete tools for efficient water management.

Futouris and the former Hotelplan Group, now part of the DERTOUR Group, collaborated with the sustainability consultancy Triple Impact Hospitality to develop and expand the expertise contained in the manual. The toolkit includes:

  • Clearly presented facts about water management in hotels, as well as the ecological and economic benefits of sustainable water use

  • Tips and concrete instructions for savings and efficiency improvements in areas such as food and beverage, housekeeping, technology, and guest communication

  • Business cases from the hotel industry to demonstrate potential savings

"Water is one of our most valuable resources, and many destinations are struggling with water scarcity. The tourism industry can make a significant contribution to reducing consumption through targeted measures. With this digital toolkit, we offer easy access to practical knowledge to support hotels in systematically analyzing their own water consumption, identifying potential savings, and reducing consumption through targeted measures," says Swantje Lehners, Managing Director of Futouris.

The project aims to translate knowledge into action and establish water management as an integral part of hotels' sustainability strategies. “With the toolkit, we make sustainability concrete. It translates scientific findings into simple, applicable steps and motivates hotel teams to actively take responsibility – without additional complexity, but with real impact,” adds Joanne Hendrickx, founder of Triple Impact Hospitality.

From theory to practice: Sustainability training for hotels in Hurghada

Following the successful training sessions conducted by Futouris and Hotelplan Group in Turkey (2023), which trained approximately 150 sustainability and quality managers in sustainable hotel management, another joint sustainability training session was held on November 25, 2025, at the Steigenberger ALDAU Beach Hotel in Hurghada, Egypt, with the support of Triple Impact Hospitality and MTS Global.

The practical workshops for around 60 participants from 33 partner hotels addressed typical challenges of daily hotel operations and presented effective, practical solutions for water and energy savings, waste reduction, and the involvement of employees and guests, all of which can be directly integrated into daily work routines.

The training also saw the first presentation of the newly developed digital Water Management Toolkit, which can now be actively used by the entire tourism industry. “Sustainability is most successful when it is understandable, tangible, and implementable in everyday work. That is exactly what we achieve with the toolkit and our training courses – together with Futouris and the people in the hotels,” says Friederike Grupp, Director of Sustainability, formerly Hotelplan Group, now part of the DERTOUR Group.

Together for sustainable transformation in the hotel industry

The new Water Management Toolkit complements the existing Futouris toolkits on Sustainable Food and Plastic Waste Reduction. Through the interplay of digital tools and practical training, Futouris and Hotelplan Group, part of the DERTOUR Group, are paving the way for effective operational implementation and the long-term integration of sustainability in the hotel industry. At the same time, they demonstrate how innovation, knowledge transfer, and cooperation can effectively drive the sustainable transformation of tourism.
