The aim of the project is to raise awareness of sustainability in tourism among selected LCC and TLT partner offices with the help of a specially designed training programme.

Experiential Sustainability II

Project results:

  • Raising awareness of sustainability in tourism among selected LCC and TLT partner offices

  • With the involvement of travel agency chains, the project sponsors of the Futouris project ‘Spurenleser’ (Trail Reader) in Namibia and Gebeco as a travel specialist, a training programme tailored to the project region of Namibia, 'Experiential Sustainability II' was developed and designed to convey a comprehensive understanding of sustainability. This includes online training, preparatory and follow-up workshops, and a seminar trip through Namibia, during which participants are directly involved in a Futouris project and can experience it live.

Experiential Sustainability II

Following the successful completion of the pilot project ‘Experiential Sustainability’ in South Africa with 14 highly trained travel agents who are enthusiastic about sustainability, the travel distribution chains LCC and TLT have decided to continue the project. Although the topic of sustainability is gaining in importance, the tourism industry is still responding cautiously. Surveys of travel agencies conducted by the German Travel Association (DRV) and the Austrian Travel Association (ÖRV) show that sustainability is still not being addressed sufficiently in sales. The main reason for this continues to be the insufficient knowledge of travel agency employees on the subject. In order to close this knowledge gap, it is necessary to further expand training opportunities for travel agents and to raise awareness of sustainable travel offers. The training programme ‘Erlebbare Nachhaltigkeit II’ (Experiential Sustainability II) builds on the training already completed. This year's destination focus is on Namibia.

TourCert's ‘CSR Basic’ online training course provides travel agency employees with basic knowledge on the topic of sustainability in tourism. A preparatory seminar will deepen the theoretical content and provide preparatory knowledge about Namibia as a destination. On the subsequent seminar trip, which is planned and carried out by Gebeco, participants can apply what they have learned and experience the scope, possibilities and requirements of sustainable travel offers directly on site. The centrepiece of the seminar trip is a visit to sustainable projects, in particular the Futouris project ‘Spurenleser’ (Trail Reader). Accommodation is in local and ecologically managed establishments. After the trip, the experiences are reflected upon and evaluated in a follow-up seminar. This should enable travel agency employees to incorporate their knowledge of sustainability directly into customer advice at the counter and encourage customers to adopt sustainable travel behaviour.
