Become part of our project to promote women in the Indian Himalayas
Become part of our joint project with Gebeco and Fernweh Fair Travel in the Indian Himalayas. We support a group of women in developing new perspectives through their integration into the local tourism sector. This not only creates additional income opportunities, but also greater self-determination, recognition, and social participation.
Women in rural areas have hardly any rights
The situation of women in rural regions like Chamoli, our project area, is challenging. They have few rights, frequently suffer domestic violence, and are often widowed at a young age, yet are not allowed to remarry. Women and children are forced to remain in the region under the control of men, working in the fields, caring for the house and family, and tending to livestock, but they do not earn their own income.
Our shared goal: empowering women through workshops and education
The main goal of this project is to empower women in the villages of Chamoli through tourism and to support them in finding employment and improving their lives.
As a first step, together with our project coordinator, Poonam Rawat-Hahne from Fernweh-Fair-Travel, we built a community center—a place where the women can meet and exchange ideas, and where the planned workshops will take place.
During a project visit by Alicia Kern, responsible for sustainability and corporate communications at our member and project sponsor Gebeco, the focus was on exchanging ideas and wishes with women from four surrounding villages. The women's desire for better educational opportunities, especially for their children, was particularly strong. This wish was immediately put into action: Alicia gave English lessons to a total of 81 children over four evenings. The lessons have continued ever since, with great enthusiasm from the children.
The women also have a great interest in educational opportunities, both for their children and for themselves: sewing courses, training in the preparation of tea and spice mixtures, as well as hospitality and the cooking of more elaborate, typical Indian delicacies for visitors, and computer courses for children, especially girls.
Become part of the project and support the women on their path to greater self-reliance, economic independence and participation.
