Implementation partner sought for the project "Biodiversity Protection in Tourism"
The protection of biodiversity is of particular importance in all sectors of the economy, especially in the tourism industry, as an intact natural environment is an integral part of the product. Thus, Futouris e.V., the sustainability initiative of the German tourism industry, has launched its new industry project “Biodiversity in Tourism” in 2025. The aim of this project is to reduce negative impacts on biodiversity in the touristic value chain, to maximize the contribution of tourism to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity in tourist destinations and to anchor concrete measures in all processes of the tourism core business.

Background
In phase 1 of the project five Futouris member companies have been conducting a thorough analysis with the partners WWF Germany and mascontour to determine and assess the impacts of the company’s activities on biodiversity along the value chain. The results were used to create individual biodiversity strategies and action plans with concrete measures.
While these identified impacts differ depending on the type and portfolio of tourism businesses; water and energy consumption, waste, land use, noise & light pollution as well as food & beverage offer have been identified as the most material impacts in all companies.
Against this background, phase 2 of the industry project is going to dive deeper in the analysis of the most relevant material impacts with the aim to develop concrete measures to decrease them.
Planned Implementation Project
The analysis has shown that especially hotels and cruise ships have a significant impact on biodiversity: Through their operational hotel management on site /on board as well as through their food and beverage offer along global supply chains.
Thus, the project consists of two modules (providers may apply for implementation of both modules or just one of the two):
Module A: Biodiversity Criteria and Measures in Hotel Operations
(E.g. Water, energy, land use, biodiversity-friendly site management)Module B: Biodiversity in Food & Beverage Supply Chains
(Supplier Mapping; Deforestation-free and ocean-friendly sourcing)
Details on the respective work packages and milestones can be found in the project outline.
Call for tenders
Futouris seeks a qualified implementation partner (or partners) to support the design and implementation of the modules. More information on the requirements, tasks and submission deadline can be found here:
