Packaging Waste

Packaging Waste

The hospitality industry generates large quantities of packaging waste. Here is a brief introduction to the topic.

Packaging Waste

In addition to food waste, the hospitality industry also produces large amounts of packaging waste. Targeted measures such as purchasing in bulk, using reusable packaging, introducing dispenser systems, and implementing collection and recycling schemes can help reduce it. The most commonly used packaging materials are cardboard and glass, both of which are easy to recycle. Waste compactors can also reduce the amount of storage space required for waste.

A wide range of guidelines and regulations apply to waste disposal in the hospitality industry. In Austria, the key legal framework for waste management is the Waste Management Act (Abfallwirtschaftsgesetz, AWG). In addition to the AWG, each of Austria’s nine federal states has its own waste management legislation.

Food packaging is essential for takeaway sales. It protects food during transport and helps extend its shelf life. The downside is that packaging generates large amounts of waste. Sustainable reusable packaging systems help reduce waste and conserve resources. The 2021 amendment to the Packaging Ordinance requires food service businesses to offer takeaway meals in reusable packaging as well.

Involve your suppliers and producers and work together to identify ways of minimising packaging and reducing waste.
