Reducing Packaging

Reducing Packaging

Preventing packaging waste is essential for sustainable waste management. Here are our tips.

Reducing Packaging
  • Work with your suppliers to reduce packaging waste.

  • Avoid products with excessive packaging.

  • Encourage staff to provide feedback if food products appear to be overpackaged or the packaging is larger than necessary.

  • Whenever possible, buy products packaged in recyclable materials such as cardboard.

  • Return packaging to your suppliers for reuse wherever possible.

  • Buy in bulk, provided that all products can be used.

  • Offer refillable bottles or carafes instead of plastic bottles (e.g. carafes of tap water).

  • Offer drinks from dispensers.

  • Offer unpackaged food products.

  • Use dispenser systems instead of individual portion packs (e.g. for sauces, spices and seasonings).

  • Recycle packaging waste.

  • Find out which recycling services are available in your area.

  • Explore the benefits of using cardboard balers and/or glass crushers to reduce the storage space needed for waste.

  • Explore opportunities for upcycling – turning waste materials into new products.
