The “food waste hierarchy” shows waste management options for businesses. However, the best solution is to prevent food waste from occurring in the first place.
There are two categories of waste:
food that can still be eaten, reused, or passed on (in accordance with legal regulations),
and inedible food waste that can be used as compost or as a source of energy or heat.

Disposing of food in a landfill is the least attractive option.
