Together with its partner Fernweh Fair Travel, Futouris and Gebeco are committed to fostering sustainable development and creating new opportunities for local communities in the Indian Himalayas. One year after the opening of the Community Development Center in the state of Uttarakhand, it is clear that the approach is delivering results. In a short period of time, the center has developed into an important hub for education, exchange, and empowerment for women and children in the region.

Education as a key to new opportunities

A central component of the project is the promotion of educational opportunities, particularly in English language training. This demand came directly from the community – especially from women who want better future prospects for their children.

In the first year alone, 15 children achieved an A2 level in English. Through professional training and personal support, they have developed essential communication skills that will enable them to access employment opportunities in tourism and beyond in the future.

Empowering women and creating income opportunities

Another key focus is the economic empowerment of women. Thanks to the new Community Development Center, women now have a space not only to practice yoga themselves, but also to offer yoga classes for locals and travelers. This creates new sources of income while also increasing visibility and self-confidence.

Local ownership and sustainable structures

A key success factor of the project is the close involvement of the local community. From the very beginning, efforts have focused on building local ownership and establishing sustainable structures.

A locally based coordinator, whose position was newly created, supports these efforts.

Looking ahead

In the next phase of the project, the plan is to further develop income-generating opportunities for women through additional education and training programs, while strengthening cooperation with the tourism sector.

The overarching goal remains to empower the local community in the long term and enable sustainable development driven from within.

About the project

The future belongs to women! The joint project with Gebeco therefore aims to empower a group of women in the region around Chamoli in northern India by involving them in the tourism sector. For example, they are trained in the production of local products that they can sell to visitors and locals, enabling them to generate their own income and be independent.
