Huge success: Online seminar “Reducing plastic and maintaining hygiene standards” for hotels attracts over 70 participants
After the successful completion of phase 1 of our industry project “Plastic-free holidays” on the Balearics Islands with the conduction of the pre-study and the coordination of suitable plastic reduction measures last year, phase 2 was about to start this spring. The participating hotels were ready to implement the agreed plastic reduction measures on their premises supported by our project partners Travel Without Plastics, Save The Med and CleanWave.
With the Corona pandemic starting and the closing of all hotels we were not able to implement the measures in spring as planned. When re-opened again the hotels had to face huge challenges regarding the new hygiene regulations and still wanting to reduce single-use plastic.
In order to further support our hotel partners and give practical advice for reducing plastic waste AND meeting the hygiene regulation we have conducted an online seminar for Spanish hotels in cooperation with Travel Without Plastic and Intertek Cristal. Expert speakers Jo Hendrickx from Travel Without Plastics and Anna Vitoria and Ana Amoeiro from Intertek Cristal gave the interested participants insight into procedures to help minimize the use of single-use plastic and maintain hygiene standards with a focus on water dispensers instead of plastic bottles, food service, cleaning / disinfection, responsible use and disposal of unavoidable plastic. In addition, they presented concrete advice on meeting the Spanish COVID regulations while reducing plastic. Our project partners from the Balearic Government supported the webinar by extending greeting words to the participants, underlining the importance of sustainability in times of crisis.
There are several reasons why single-use plastic products are not the answer to hygiene regulations as viruses and bacteria live on all surfaces and single-use plastic items often give a false sense of reassurance (e.g. gloves, masks). It is advised to focus on implementing / improving hygienic processes to ensure better hygiene now but also in the face of any future illness outbreak. How to do this and what hotels need to be aware shows our online seminar:
Reducing the plastic waste generated by tourism and improving the recycling of unavoidable plastic waste on Balearic Islands – these are the goals of the industry project "Plastic-free holidays on the Balearic Islands" the Futouris members are implementing together with the Government of the Balearic Islands.
