Overwhelming participation in kick-off on Crete
As part of the project “Crete – first steps towards a sustainable food destination”, a kick-off event with all stakeholders took place in the Atlantica Sensatori Resort on Crete on Monday, 3 July 2017. Approximately 120 participants witnessed the starting of the next project phase: Apart from high-level political delegates, representatives of the agricultural sector and the tourism industry also attended the kick-off. Among them were the Cretan Governeur Stavros Arnaoutakis who stated how important the project was for the island of Crete and Thomas Ellerbeck, Group Director Corporate & External Affairs of the TUI Group, who emphasized the encouraging tourism development in Greek and the opportunities of the project.
Not only the representatives of five Greek hotel groups and the TUI Destination Service set up their expectations and possible challenges of the project during the kick-off. But also olive and wine growers that are participating in the project engaged in the lively discussion and declared their intention to commonly support the project which has been funded by the TUI Care Foundation and Futouris. The kick-off participants were invited on the spot to visit the producers that are taking part in the project. The monastery St. George Epanosifis, the wineries Michalakis SA and Lyrarakis SA as well as the olive oil producer Botzakis SA had the opportunity to present their business to all project stakeholders and to the invited journalists.
The high level of involvement in the event and the success of the kick-off have once more proven: All stakeholders of the project are determined to foster a sustainable agriculture and increase the offer of sustainable products on the island and to establish a strong link to the tourism industry – and to position the island of Crete as the initial destination for sustainable food.
In this project local farmers are brought to a better understanding of sustainable management methods and are connected with local tourism professionals. The link will be used to identify and exploit synergies between food producers and holiday makers.
