Holidaymakers are impressed by sustainable project wines produced in La Geria
The promotion of the ecological and preservation of traditional viticulture in La Geria, Lanzarote, is the aim of the joint project with the TUI Care Foundation. In order to achieve this ambitious goal various measures are implemented together with the project partner Senderismo Lanzarote and bluecontec GmbH supporting the sale of the project wines. The project team is supported by D.O. Lanzarote, a local organization dedicated to traditional winegrowing. One of the measures is to increase the awareness and thus the marketing of the organic wines. By linking local wine growers and producers with the hotel industry new sales channels are created. For example, holidaymakers can taste the sustainable project wines in interactive wine tastings and learn about their special characteristics.
The first wine tastings took place in April in the participating hotels Seaside Los Jameos Playa and Lava Beach in cooperation with the participating bodegas. Each bodega presents its organically produced wines to the guests of the respective hotel during an evening tasting. The bodega gives an insight into the production of the wines and the respective taste qualities. The guests also get interesting information about the unique cultivation in funnels which is so special for La Geria. Holidaymakers can “taste” the peculiarities of La Geria in a relaxed atmosphere and can take the sustainable project wine as a souvenir.
Currently, there are six different types of organic wine available from the three participating bodegas Los Bermejos, La Geria and Vega de Yuco. These can be tasted and bought in the bodegas itself as well as in selected hotels and restaurants on the island.
In total, nine wine tastings have taken place since April with a total of almost 170 participants. The feedback of the hotel guests is very positive. They find the wine tastings a great way to learn about the local and sustainable products of their holiday destination while tasting them in a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
Both the bodegas and the hotels are also very satisfied with the events.
“I can wholeheartedly say that we are pleased to be part of the TUI Care Foundation project. Not only do we support traditional and organic viticulture, we also have the opportunity to show the uniqueness, beauty and peculiarity of the island through the senses to the hotel guests. In the meantime, the wine tastings are so popular that guests ask us in advance about social media for the next dates” says Beate Reber-Sekula, hotel manager of Seaside Los Jameos Playa.
Rut, the responsible person for ecotourism at the Los Bermejos Winery, adds: “The wine tasting events at the hotels are successful because they provide a channel to promote our unique viticulture which has so much value for us, as well as the traditions and of course the main figures, the farmers. On the other hand, we can promote our organic wines with their values, and we share also the difficulties involved”.
During the months of July, August and September, no wine tasting are taking place due to the grape harvest. From October, further tastings will follow with the “new” wines.
This project focusses on supporting the organic and traditional wine growing in order to preserve the natural resources of Lanzarote and the cultural heritage of La Geria. Simultaneously the local wine producers are being linked to the hotel industry so that new distribution channels will be built and guests can “taste” the unique character of La Geria.
