For the first time in Tunisian tourism industry: Qualification of tutors in hotels & sustainability seminar for vocational teachers

In winter 2018/2019 important milestones were reached in the development partnership “Practice oriented training for hotel employees in Tunisia”.

The first designated tutors were qualified for their work in the supervision and guidance of the apprentices during the practical phases in the hotels. The corresponding qualification programme was developed in advance together with the project partner German-Tunisian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK)” and was successfully tested in this first training.

The nine-day “Training of Trainers” workshop took place in three stages in November and December 2018. Important elements of the trainings were measures to successfully design the practical training in the hotels, communication tools and other soft skills. The designated tutors of the ten participating hotels were highly motivated and actively co-designed the training. All tutors passed the written and oral examination successfully and the corresponding certificates were given to them in the presence of GIZ, the hotel association FTH and hotel managers. The newly qualified tutors are now the contacts for 38 apprentices from two pilot classes with a focus on “restaurant & bar”.

An innovation was also made for the Tunisian hotel management schools: For the first time vocational teachers have been specially trained on sustainability topics. The four-day seminar for the module “Culture Environmentale” was jointly developed by the project partners and took place in the National Centre for Training of Trainers, CENAFFIF, in February 2019. 14 teachers from five different schools took part in this first training, a second training is planned promptly. As part of the training the teachers worked interactively on the design of the module by jointly defining the exam criteria, exam methods (practical or theoretical) and details for the integration into the timetables.

The development partnership of Thomas Cook and Futouris with the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is supported through the develoPP.de-Programm (www.develoPPP.de) of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
