Project description

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world.  Thomas Cook AG employees have been engaged in the education and medical care of, in the meanwhile, 400 children in one of the suburbs of Kathmandu. They have been doing so for more than 30 years.

This support mainly focuses on Tibetan refugee children in Nepal (about 80 percent), as well as Nepalese children of closely related Tibetan tribes (Sherpa, Tamang, etc.). Even though the flight out of Tibet took place in 1959 and, therefore the group of needy already represents the second possibly even the third generation, the conditions surrounding the Tibetans’ integration in Nepal remain difficult.

In Nepal school attendance is compulsory. To enforce this the first three years are free. Expenses however still arise through the need for school books and uniforms. As part of the project, children whose families cannot raise these funds are supported. Of the current more than 400 children approximately 160 attend a secondary school. An approximately further 40 students are supported by Kinder in Not e.V.

Since children at secondary schools and students have received priority in previous years, kindergarten children as well as the first and second pre-school classes will, in a joint project with Futouris, be improved.

Project goals

  • Appointing an extra teacher
  • Purchasing of teaching and learning material
  • Installing extra recreational opportunities in the schoolyard (swings, slides etc.)
