Project Description

Topics surrounding climate, and more recently climate change, are particularly important to the inhabitants of the North Sea island Juist. They are ready to face the challenges of the future and have decided early on to do what they can to combat climate change. With bold steps Juist aims to become the world's leading model of a carbon-neutral island. To achieve this goal much effort is needed, with a variety of collaborators. Futouris is helping with scientific, financial and political support to help the island of Juist achieve the status of "carbon neutral" and to become a global showcase.

From 2006 to 2009 Juist was a pilot partner in the research project „KUNTIKUM“ with the University of Lüneburg. In the context of the research project the first workshops were conducted to define goals, strategies and measures to pave the road towards becoming climate-neutral island. In addition, the objectives in the mission statement for „Klimainsel Juist“ were solidified. The Bremen Energy Institute was commissioned in the beginning of 2008 to create a CO2-balance for the island. Energy consumption in 2008 totaled 19 590 tonnes of CO2. On the basis of this analysis, a plan is now being developed to achieve the goal of climate neutrality by offsetting CO2 generated through energy consumption. First steps are directed at reducing energy consumption, as well as improving energy efficiency and improving energy gain through renewable energy sources.

Project Objectives

Target 1:

Target 1 includes preparing further documentation based on the existing emission inventory of the island, including adapting policies to take into account tourist transportation.  For this purpose a visitor survey will be conducted. The survey will also be used to estimate the support and willingness of guests to contribute monetarily to help achieve the goal of becoming a carbon-neutral destination. In this phase, the relevant stakeholders will be identified and the practices of the islanders, tourist businesses, and tourist themselves will be recorded. This information will be used in the development of a campaign strategy as part of Target 3.

Target 2:

Target 2 includes developing a master plan / specific instructions for the reduction of energy demand and emissions as well as the parallel development of renewable energy generation.

Target 3:

Target 3 includes creating an integrated campaign designed to persuade a majority of the residents of Juist to support converting the island to a climate-neutral destination. Elements of the campaign will include identifying potential sources of funding to improve energy consumption. For example, a program may be implemented that can provide financing with long payback periods to support efforts to improve building insulation. To demonstrate political support, renovation of the public buildings on the island will be implemented by the local authority during the project period.
